Walk length:
2.5km (1hr 30mins) or 4.5km (2hrs).
Activity aims:
Students on a guided walk in the North York Moors
A circular walk through woodland, grazing land and moorland. The content of the walk can be varied either by using maps and aerial photographs and focussing on geographical skills or by doing sensory activities and focussing on literacy skills or a combination of both.
Students will learn:
- why the landscape is like it is;
- how people use the landscape now and how it was used in the past;
- how and why moorland is managed by burning;
- the arguments for and against grouse shooting;
- how different river features develop;
- how rivers are part of the water cycle;
- how they themselves can help care for this environment.
Students will be able to practice:
- identifying features on a map, an aerial photograph and in the landscape;
- recognising symbols on a map;
- using a compass to work out direction and orientate a map;
- following a route on a map;
- recognising animals and plants from different habitats;
- recognising features created by river processes;
- considering facts and formulating their own opinion about an issue.
