Prof. Ian Mercer
- We define local communities as 'OUR' people.'We always have cared' we say but we have to be seen to care more: for farmers first, but also their myriad supporters, contractors, JCB drivers etc (Dynevor newspaper reporting Tir Cymen surrounded by adverts for specialists) We need to inspire more 'functionally self sufficient communities
- 'Other people' all the rest, education without callling it that. John Barrett's kind of communication in Broadhaven needs resurrecting.
- Our political 'masters' need educating too as AMs previous evening – demonstrated. Displayed an innocence or even ignorance of the real rural world, and abysmally old fashioned attitudes to us, to what is needed.
- While we strive to get the whole landscape respected Protected Areas will need to remain as beacons for a long time. The 3 NPs could specialise in their leadership - mountains, coast and 'the rest'. I wish CCW had produced Landmap in my day.
- NPAs themselves: protect the front line - wardens and information dispensing is critical. 'If it ain't broke don't fix it' (of the system). You have to be 'outrageously ambitious',’progressive austerity underpinned by generosity of spirit' said someone. NPAs' outcomes? What are they- sustaining, the standard, the magic, the wow factor.
Thank you for your dedication to your roles, keep it alive.
