Stephen trained as a glassmaker and Kate for a fine art degree

Combined talents

Stephen Gillies studied for a degree in glass making at Stourbridge College of Art. The west midlands town has long been home to the glass making industry. He went on to work for skilled glass makers in Denmark and Switzerland to perfect his glass making technique.

Kate Jones studied for a degree in fine art, also in Stourbridge, and completed a post graduate technical course in glassware. She brings her design flair to the partnership, while Stephen brings skilled know-how – blowing all the glass ware from hot glass. Kate then hand carves each piece.

A clear success

Did you know?

The couple’s glassware has featured on the BBC's Antiques Roadshow. A February episode of the show saw expert Christopher Payne raving about a beautiful Gillies Jones bowl.

The couple's work now sells from around £70 for a small bowl, to more than £800 for large spun plates and £3,500 for large sculptures.

In 2003, after the Victoria and Albert Museum commissioned them to create a piece, the popularity of Kate and Stephen’s glassware soared, catching the eye of private collectors and celebrity clients including:

  • Hugh Grant
  • Kate Adie
  • Brian Blessed
  • Philip Glenister
  • Alan Ayckbourn

It also features in public collections at venues including:

  • The V&A, London
  • Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge
  • Bolton Museum and Art Gallery
  • Ebeltoft Glass Museum, Denmark
  • Museum of Modern Glass, Rodental, Germany
